Allegany County 911 reports another tractor trailer crash on Haystack Mountain.
The incident occurred in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 68 near Exit 41 at around 6:30 PM
Fire, rescue and EMS have been dispatched.

Yep. They have truck warning signs about the road grade coming down from Frostburg, but too many truckers ignore them. By the time they get past LaVale, their brakes are either smoking, on fire, or failed completely, and this is what happens. I used to live on the ridge on West Side overlooking 68 and could see the traffic from just shy of the Greene St./220 exit, all the way past the Moose Curve and to the Maryland Ave. ramp. As a kid, I knew when a truck was going too fast just by the smell of the brakes in the air, so this is nothing new. I’d seen many trucks pulled over on the shoulder with their flashers on, the driver walking around his truck and scratching his head; I’d also seen plenty that were wedged up solid on the Jersey wall at the Curve, and CPD, CFD, and EMS were lined up like ducklings behind it. I’m 35 years gone from living back home, but when I do get back, I don’t see any major traffic modifications that I can point at. It just looks, from my perch, that there’s more commercial and residential traffic in that area now, and there may be more truck drivers are coming through who don’t know the territory well and the hazards that are there. If MSP is actually going to do more highway traffic enforcement with commmercial vehicles, they don’t need to be sitting on the shoulder at Haystack Mountain, they need to be starting several miles further up. Like Clarysville.

Looks like that milling on I68 was a waste of time and money….. Trucks need to be slowed down…

I don’t know how many times I have seen trucks in the left lane of I68 going east from LaVale instead of using the truck lane. MSP needs to start enforcing this area ALL THE TIME! Someone is going to get killed in one of these accidents one day.

Let me speak from a truck drivers wife stand point and explain it’s more than enforcement of the speeds..the root of the issue is the license.These fresh outta truck driving school students have no experience get behind the wheel after graduation and have not a clue how to drive..I believe the only way to get a remedy on this issue is to have more school and time spent driving. When these men are trained proper driving skills are not given for time of crisis. And to be honest the ones driving for many of years dont make these mistakes they are rookie mistakes and not every driver is careless. Maybe a pull over spot like they had on wellersburg mountain so they have time to cool off before they start down the mountain. If they dont gear down early it’s too late once the brakes are hot and no way to stop. LETS NOT FORGET if it wasnt for these men or women sacrificing driving and missing their families we wouldnt have materials food or other items that make our life easier and cheaper.
