Allegany BOE outlines possible school reopening options

July 22nd, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Maryland established some basic guidelines each local school system must incorporate in a reopening plan the state education department will review and approve by August 14. At that time the state will institute protocols that follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, consider input of public health experts and provide for flexibility for local school systems. While a number of school systems have already revealed their plans- it’s a work in progress for Allegany County which could consider allowing students back to the classroom; online learning or a hybrid of both. In reaching out to parents for input, Allegany County Board of Education President Tammy Fraley said she estimates that it is a 75-25 split at this point, with the overwhelming majority opposed to returning kids to the classrooms…

The BOE will be obligated to restart in class schooling as there are families that still don’t have adequate internet service to allow online classes.
That will be a tough call for the parents. As has recently been shown a person can’t even expect adequate health precautions to be taken at our local hospital so how will classroom teachers cope?

State laws require vaccinations for children. Are the rules being changed? There have been too many mixed messages, too much confusion. No parent is going to be comfortable with taking a major risk regarding their child’s health. And when a child does become sick, is the BOE going to assume responsibility? Far too many unknowns at this point. But please hurry with your decision. People’s lives are hanging in the balance.

Kids don’t really get sick or die from Covid. Online learning has failed. Cut teachers salaries 50% and you will see the union back in the classroom by the end of the week

Which internet provider is going to provide free service for home education ? Which company or what person will donate computers and web service to each citizen ?
I posed this question to AT&T marketing recently after I paid over 100.00 and still could not tether “unlimited data” into my computer. I could tether only 5 gigs if I paid an additional 10.00 to my 65.00 call plan. Is 5 gigs a month enough to complete home learning courses? Many families in Cumberland only have the 2 gigs provided by Safelink , in their phones. Many families have no computers .
I expressed myself to AT&T through the BBB. My complaint was deceptive advertising , price gouging internet service to Americans and why can a company dictate how , when, where we use data that we paid for. It’s my data , I paid for it.
Local internet company charges 50.00 monthly however they have difficulties with billing procedures from personal experiences. Safe link provides 2 gigs free, which is about 2 hours of video. Is that enough for families in poverty to do home learning ? They charge 10.00 a gig after free ones run out. If you have several children how many gigabits would one need to acquire to home school? Many families in Cumberland aren’t able to use local internet company , and we only have one , due to billing problems.
Take the lead on this issue Governor. Show the nation how to provide services and computers for all Americans.
