Allegany County Student Enrollment Numbers Decline

While the hope had been that population trends in Allegany County public schools would begin to turnaround- the latest numbers show otherwise. Enrollment numbers locally have been in a steady decline since the 1970’s. The number of students is important funding wise for the board of education as the maintenance of effort funding level provided by the county is based on per pupil expenditures. The fewer students, the fewer dollars the system will see. The numbers released by Superintendent Dr David Cox during this week’s school board meeting show a decline of about 50 students from last year. However, he says it’s important to note that the numbers are showing an increase on the kindergarten and elementary level- which bodes well for the future…
