It is officially summer and it is officially July, which means it is National Ice Cream month. So what is one to do to officially celebrate? Dig into the sweet flavors of a cooling scoop of ice cream. And, look no further, because Allegany County Tourism has launched an official Ice Cream Trail that features nine area establishments and stretches from one end of the county to the other.

“Food trails and culinary-focused travel are popular reasons for road trips,” stated Ashli Workman, Director of Tourism for Allegany County, Maryland. “Destinations across the country boast their beer, wine, and coffee trails. Here in Allegany County, we have an abundance of great ice cream locations, so we thought, why not highlight and create our very own experience for travelers.”

The featured ice cream locations include:

• Oak Barrel Café – Little Orleans, Maryland
  Don’t judge a book by its cover! While the outside may appear to be a convenience stop and gas station off I-68, the inside reveals a café, which includes a menu of great ice cream classics.
• Twisteez – Cumberland, Maryland
  Known for their unique flavor combinations such as the Fireside S’mores, Peanut Butter Pretzel, and Apple Strudel.
• Queen City Creamery & Café – Cumberland, Maryland
  The Creamery may be known for their homemade frozen custard and “flavors of the day,” but did you know they feature a “grown-ups only” drink menu, with items such as the Frozen Dirty Banana featuring vanilla custard, Kahlua, banana liqueur, bananas, and milk?
• Livvy’s Soft Serve – Cresaptown, Maryland
  With a motto of “Start your diet tomorrow,” Livvy’s is home to the generous portion sized cones and indulgent sundaes!
• FRO-YO Factory – LaVale, Maryland
  Featuring frozen yogurt with a self-serve, build-your-own sundae bar, plus, gluten-free options.
• Mountain City Coffeehouse & Creamery – Frostburg, Maryland
  Hand-dipped cones, milkshakes, sundaes, and floats, featuring locally made ice cream sourced from Lakeside Creamery in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland.
• Princess Restaurant – Frostburg, Maryland
  The Princess may be known for their Truman Booth, which is dedicated to the 1953 visit of President Harry Truman and his wife Bess, but today, the restaurant is shaking things up with their Super Shakes, which are loaded with ice cream and sweets.
• Frostburg Freeze – Frostburg, Maryland
  Home to the Boston Shake! Is it a hot fudge sundae inside a milkshake or is it a milkshake poured over top a hot fudge sundae? That’s the question we hope you can help us answer when you visit.
• Busters Treats – Lonaconing, Maryland
  A pop-up ice cream stand featuring homemade peanut butter sauce and fresh toppings.

Originally, Allegany County Tourism launched the trail through their blog – http://mdmountainblog.com/ice-cream-trail, and shared on their social media channels.

“The response was immediate and overwhelming with the reaction being one of pure affection for the idea,” shared Workman.

Because of the public’s feedback, a rack card was developed, which features the route of the trail on the front and a list of the nine businesses, their phone numbers, and addresses, on the back. Rack cards are available for pick up at the Allegany County Visitor Center, located at 13 Canal Street, Cumberland, Maryland, as well as other area establishments.
