Arrest Made In Stabbing Investigation

Early Sunday morning, 08/26/2012, at approximately 3:45 AM, the Cumberland Police responded to a private residence on Davidson Street in Cumberland for a reported assault involving a knife. When Officers arrived they found a 45 year old male victim who had been stabbed in the chest and upper arm. The Cumberland Fire Department ambulance arrived and began emergency care of the victim before transporting him to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for further treatment and surgery.

            Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. The scene was processed for evidence by a Crime Scene Technician from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division.

            Investigators learned that the victim was confronted at the residence by two suspects. There was an argument and then a physical confrontation which led to the  victim being assaulted by both suspects and stabbed by one of the suspects.

            The first suspect was described as a black male, approximately 25 years of age, 6-00 in height, 190 pounds, and wearing a baseball hat. The second suspect was described as a white male,  approximately 25 years of age, 5-09 in height, 165 pounds, and also wearing a baseball hat.

            A search of the area was conducted at that time, but the suspects were not located.

            C3I Investigators interviewed a number of witnesses and developed information about two possible suspects. On Monday, 08/27/2012, C3I Investigators, with assistance from the Cumberland Police CERT Team, served search warrants at two separate residences on Bellevue Street in Cumberland. Investigators recovered numerous items of evidence related to the assault and interviewed additional witnesses who provided further information about the suspects.

            As a result, C3I Investigators obtained arrest warrants for two suspects, who have been identified as 33 year old Paul William Thomas Goetz, of Cumberland, and 24 year old Sheldon Lyon, of Cumberland. Both are being charged with Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, and several other related charges.

            On Monday evening, 08/27/2012, Goetz was arrested by members of the C3I Warrant/Fugitive Unit. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an initial appearance. He is currently being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center pending his next court appearance.

            Police are still looking for Sheldon Lyon. He is described as a black male, 24 years of age, approximately 6-00 to 6-03 in height,  and 180 to 200 pounds in weight. He claims to be from Jamaica, and according to witnesses who know him, speaks with what is described as a Jamaican accent.

Callers who wish to remain anonymous can call the Allegany/Mineral County Crime Solvers at 301-722-4300, where callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1500.00 for information leading to an arrest in this case.

            The investigation is continuing by C3I and the Cumberland Police.
