On Thursday, at approximately 8:00 a.m., the Cumberland Police Department was notified by school administrators at Allegany High School of a threatening message that was discovered written in a boy’s bathroom. An investigation began immediately by reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing students. Due to the threat the school was evacuated and the students were transported to Braddock Middle School for the remainder of the school day. Allegany High School was searched with the assistance of explosive detection canines from the Maryland State Police and the Department of Homeland Security. The building was deemed safe after the search was completed.
The investigation continued by the Cumberland Police Department and Administrators with the Board of Education. This morning a person of interest was developed (student).
As a result the student, Dacota Graig Powers, 18 years of age was placed under arrest and transported to the Cumberland Police Department for processing. Powers was charged with the following; Arson/Threat, false statement – using a destructive device, and disturbing school operations. Powers is currently awaiting his initial appearance at the District Court of Maryland.
Powers will also be disciplined in accordance with the school system’s policies on student discipline.
