Assault on Police

August 10th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

On Tuesday at approximately 9:30 a.m. a uniformed Cumberland Police Officer responded to the District Court Building in reference to a wanted subject being at the Parole and Probation Office.

Upon the officer’s arrival he made contact with the wanted individual who was identified as Jerry Lee Brown of Cumberland, MD.  The officer advised Mr. Brown that he had a warrant for his arrest.  Brown argued the facts of the warrant and told the officer that he did not have a warrant, that he got it taken care of.  As the officer was explaining the details of the warrant to Brown, he became agitated and argumentative, disturbing other offices in Parole and Probation.  Brown then stood up and began making a phone call.  The officer reached out to place Brown under arrest and that is when Brown resisted arrest and began to assault the officer.

Brown failed to comply and cease his assaultive behavior.  Brown assaulted the officer by striking him on his head and face causing his eye glasses to break.  A District Court Bailiff responded to assist the officer who was being assaulted.  Brown then assaulted the Bailiff numerous times, briefly knocking him unconscious.

The Cumberland Police Officer attempted to subdue Brown by utilizing his Taser which had no affect on Brown who continued to assault the officer and Bailiff.

A Parole and Probation employee was also assaulted by Brown before he was able to be restrained and eventually handcuffed.

Additional Cumberland Police Officers responded to assist.  While they were trying to take Brown out of the building, he continued his assaultive behavior which caused an injury to a second Cumberland Police Officer.

One Cumberland Police Officer and the District Court Bailiff were both taken to the local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries caused by Brown.  The second Cumberland Police Officer was seen at an urgent care facility for his injuries.

Brown was transported to Police Headquarters for processing.

Brown was originally wanted on an arrest warrant related to an incident that took place on August 2nd, 2021.  On that date Brown arrived at his ex-girlfriend’s residence in Cumberland and assaulted her.  The female victim stated that Brown showed up, began to argue with her, pushed her up against a table and began to strangle her.  Officers observed redness to the victim’s throat and neck area as a result of being strangled by Brown.

A witness to this assault was contacted and confirmed that Brown did in fact strangle his ex-girlfriend.  The victim did not seek medical attention in this matter.

Officers attempted to contact Brown on that date but were unsuccessful.  Charges were applied for at District Court which resulted in the arrest warrant being issued charging Brown with First-Degree and Second-Degree Assault.

Brown was additionally charged with the following related to today’s incident;

  • Second Degree Assault resulting in injury to a Law Enforcement Officer.
  • 3 counts of Second-Degree Assault
  • Resisting Arrest
  • 2 counts Disorderly Conduct
  • Destruction of Property
