February 20th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Once a bronze statue of Lefty Grove is erected in the pitcher's hometown of Lonaconing, Maryland's comptroller plans to use it as the starting point for a Beer and Baseball Trail to guide lovers of both on a trip from the state's mountains to its seashore. "There is no more deserving a request for a state grant this year than the Lefty Grove Statue Project," Peter Franchot said Friday. The Cumberland Times News reports the project's committee requested $75,000. "I can't imagine that request not being successful," Franchot said. The bronze statue of Baltimore Orioles great and Maryland native Cal Ripken stands at Camden Yards. The cash is requested via Senate Bill 900 introduced by Sen. George Edwards and House Bill 987 introduced by the Allegany County delegation. Franchot said decisions about such requests traditionally take place at the end of the General Assembly session.
