Bear hunting zone expands, permits increase in Maryland

July 7th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Times News reports Maryland will increase by 50 percent the number of bear hunting permits for the October season, a result of the expansion of the hunting zone from two counties to four. The growth of the bear population eastward from Garrett and Allegany counties has brought Washington and Frederick counties into the hunt, according to Harry Spiker of the Maryland Wildlife & Heritage Service. The agency will establish a bear check-in station somewhere near the Washington/Frederick county line and continue to operate stations at the Billmeyer Work Center in Allegany County and the Mount Nebo Work Center in Garrett County.
