Berkley Springs man killed in collision

On Saturday  Troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack were dispatched to a two vehicle collision on RT 522 on the Potomac River Bridge.   The at fault vehicle was a 1988 silver Toyota Corolla, driven by David Wayne Mccumbee (52 yrs old) of Berkley Springs, WV and sole occupant.  Mr. Mccumbee was traveling N/B RT 522 crossing the bridge from West Virginia.  Mr. Mccumbee failed to drive right of the center line.  Mr. Mccumbee crossed into the S/B lane and collided head on with a 2012 Freightliner truck tractor pulling a full sized box trailer.  The tractor trailer was being driven by Jeffrey Edward Martin Sr  (40 yrs old) of Petersburg, Virginia.  Mr. Martin was traveling S/B RT 522 heading into West Virginia.   Mr. Mccumbee was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries incurred during the collision.  Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the collision.  Mr. Martin sustained no injuries during the collision.   The bridge on Rt. 522 was closed for approximately 3 hours.  The Maryland State Police were assisted by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Hancock Police Department, West Virginia State Police, Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, and the Maryland State Highway Administration.  Senior Trooper Pittman is investigation the collision.
