Bernard Holding Meeting on Possible Anti-Drug Club in Schools

Back in August, the Allegany County Board of Education agreed to look into the possibility of having an anti-drug club, where high school students would be voluntarily drug tested and provided incentives for testing negative. The concept was presented to the board by Cumberland City Councilman Seth Bernard who said the club would be similar to a program in Martins Ferry, Ohio, called Belmont County Schools Staying Clean. That program is in its fifth year and has recently been expanded to include seventh- and eighth-graders. The students would sign a contract to remain drug free, with rewards like cash and discount cards to local businesses offered to those who honor it. It would also include random drug tests. Having received the initial nod of approval from the board, Bernard is holding an organizational meeting this week to see how best to proceed…
