The 17-day search for a missing swimmer ended Friday morning when authorities located the body of 55-year-old Michael Carnock Sr.
The News-Herald reports the body was found about the 8-mile marker of the river shoreline across from the Yacht Club in Tellico Village, Daryl Smith, Loudon County Emergency Management Agency director, said.
Members of the Tellico Village Volunteer Fire Department found the body during their two-a-day surface and shoreline checks. TVVFD, EMA and Tellico Boaters Assistance Response Team had alternated search responsibilities for days.
Sheriff Tim Guider said an autopsy expected Saturday will verify if the body is Carnock, but all indicators point to an accurate identification.
“Obviously, we hope to find some answers to what maybe initially caused him to disappear like that,” Guider said. “Maybe it was a medical event, could have been a heart attack, could have been cramps.”
Carnock may have been struck by a boat. Guider said an autopsy can confirm if that occurred post-mortem.
The search included various agency assistance from inside and outside Loudon County.
“I feel like it was a well-designed (search), lots of agency involvement, lots of volunteers,” Guider said. “I believe after the first week or so we had exhausted all of our resources and capabilities and so we had to scale down a little bit but we never lost focus of every day we were out there at least twice a day. There was another push the last few days by a couple of outside agencies that came in.”

All of the recent articles concerning Loudoun County, Va. have misspelled the name of the county.
