BOE And County Commissioners Relationship Strained

While both sides have made public overtures to “bury the hatchet” it is still clear that the relationship between the Allegany County Commissioners and the Board of Education is strained at best. Commission President Michael McKay offered the latest salvo in what has become a routine “war of words” between the two elected boards when he characterized comments from board member Jeff Metz as being disrespectful to a citizen who was attempting to discuss a problem at Allegany High School. Lavale resident Kevin Shaffer told the commissioners that his comments to the school board last Tuesday night were greeted with laughter and disdain. He had been asking about privacy issues and deteriorating conditions in bathrooms at Allegany High School.
