BoE Discusses Reducing Student-Teacher Ratio

At a special meeting last week, the Allegany County Board of Education identified ways to reduce the student-teacher ratio for the 2019 school year as a top budget priority- and those discussions continued during Tuesday’s regular work session.  The school board is looking to narrow the student-teacher ratio in all classes, but is primarily focusing on reducing it at the kindergarten through second grade (K-2) levels.  An issue arose this past September where a kindergarten classroom at Parkside Elementary had nearly 30 children in it, raising concerns among some parents. Superintendent David Cox says having a better staffing ratio is an incredible need, noting that allowing teachers to have sufficient time to give to students is critical- especially for students who may need extra assistance…
