BoE Refers Proposed Policy On Teaching Controversial Issues Back To Committee

August 1st, 2019 by WCBC Radio

After further attempts to clarify the language proved unsuccessful- the Allegany County Board of Education has referred a proposed policy on the teaching of controversial issues back to the policy committee for additional refinements. The item first appeared on the school board’s June agenda with little provided in way of back ground as to how or who generated the proposed policy. At the most recent session, when the issue was brought up for a vote, board vice president David Bohn pointed out that there is no such policy required by state law. He added that in his opinion it seems implementing such a policy would place unnecessary controls on the teachers. Evan West, Uniserv representative for the Allegany County Education Association, said that there are a number of concerns- including a somewhat vague definition of “controversial”- or how those issues are broached….

The problem, as I see it, is that controversy will arise but all sides of an issue must be presented otherwise it is edict without any discussion or understanding of different positions on a subject.
Who can be counted on to not nuance or guide any discussion when dealing with controversial subjects?

      > So in studying WW2, you would advocate Hitler’s good points and fine intentions. No. Incredibly foolish. Learn the difference between an open mind and an empty one. There were no good confederates – they fought to insure slavery – where’s the good in that? This policy seems designed to echo President Idiot’s “good people on both sides” pig wash. Kill this policy now. The world in ending when I agree with DR. Bohn.

        > That’s absurd.
A controversy is having two sides to an argument and no one would take the good Hitler side, at least no right minded individual.
Your stretch is just that, trying to take the high ground by putting the other comment in a negative light.
        Try again.

          > No, I’ll stand by my original remarks. There are not two sides to Nazi’s in Charlottesville, Va., although Trump thinks there are. The aforementioned policy does not have a way to define controversy that is static – that would apply to all. Someone in trying to use this as a pretext to combat truth by calling it controversial or politically correct.

290,000 confederate soldiers died in that war. Battle, disease and while interred, combined. 31% of confederate households owned at least one slave. So I would say that 89,000 were no good & 201,000 were something other. Hitler on the other hand was a narcissistic ideologue. We’ve got more than a few of those in the House of Representatives today. Not saying that any of them would employ a gas chamber. Those Germans who voted in 1933 had no idea of the reality behind rhetorical speech. If your going to teach history, then let us not alter the facts. Don’t you agree.

Nationalism is not Nazism, Martin Luther King was not Malcolm X, The Soviets considered themselves nationalist, the Russians are nationalist, so are the French, the British, the Chinese and yes even the Americans. In fact every patriot everywhere is a nationalist. I speak English, I had know idea that Nationalist is synonymous with Nazi. Glad to see you found a way to drag Trump into this.
