BREAKING: Hunter Douglas Shifts Idle Tomorrow

April 7th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

WCBC News has learned that the 1st and 2nd shifts at Hunter Douglas have been told not to report to work tomorrow.

Customer service and credit employees that have been working from home have been advised to continue.

The stoppage is said not to be related to any case of COVID-19, although there have been some residents upset that the firm has continued to operate during the pandemic.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced Tuesday that local health departments had the power to take action if proper social distancing was not observed.

Last week, American Woodmark was forced to close for a day until an agreement could be reached which permitted it to resume operations.

Hunter Douglas employs about 800 locally and is Allegany County's largest manufacturer.

If you might get the impression that they have been shamed into closing, finally, you would be wrong. Management at Hunter Douglas have no shame.

This is sad past the point of a disgrace.

In several months, we will be able to look back and trace the vectors this virus used to spread.

At that time, if it is shown that workplaces were a direct route for infection, we will likely see suits brought against these employers.

Maybe someone might want to take a look at what those actions will do to the company’s bottom line – if that’s the only way to get through to them.

Wonder if we will get sage words from the illustrious dry cleaning delegate McKay on this latest development. I’m sure he will take credit for their closing just as he took credit for opening them back up. We haven’t seen a pandering politician like him since Kevin Kelly!

Agreed. I used to work there – almost 10 years. They don’t care one iota about their employees, in relation to the bottom line.

If we want to hold someone responsible for this mess, let’s look at China. Talk about someone who could have nipped this in the bud! What any employer has in this country is peanuts compared to China!

Dave, how do you suppose China could have nipped this in the bud? The first few cases were recognized as a new disease but with any new disease you have to figure out what it is. Even having the best scientists on the job, that takes time, as measured in weeks. And in a couple of weeks, the virus has spread.

Did China screw up? Sure – but nowhere near as badly as we did. This is not meant as an attack on anyone but we should have acted a lot sooner and we can’t put that blame on anyone else.
