11 PM UPDATE: Route 135 Now One Lane Due To Landslide

May 19th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

11:00 PM UPDATE – One lane of traffic is now open, controlled by a flagging operation.

7:00 PM UPDATE – We have an additional look at the debris and mud that has caused the closure of Maryland Route 135 between Luke and the junction with Route 36.

4:00 PM UPDATE – Maryland State Highway Administration officials have told local authorities that they hope to open Maryland 135 to one lane of traffic later this afternoon, with a flag man operation controlling flow.

We've obtained a photo of the slide.  What is not known, at this point, is the stability of that hillside.

With all of the rain this week, this may have been predictable.

Allegany County 911 advises that Maryland Route 135 has been shut down between Westernport and Luke due to a mud and rock slide.

The severity is not yet known, however previous major slides have disrupted traffic for months.

11:55 AM UPDATE:

The Maryland State Highway Administration says the affected area is between Grant Street and Route 36.  Photos from the area indicate a minor slide that has blocked westbound lanes and also partially blocked the eastbound lanes.

Officials are determining the stability of the hillside in that location, which is not far from an area that needed a soil stapling procedure a few years ago.
