July 11th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Wednesday morning, WCBC’s Dave Norman received a call from a listener with concerns that a large number of low income residents were being displaced from the Baltimore area and being relocated to Allegany County. WCBC News has learned that members of the District 1 legislative delegation have received similar complaints, and are in the process of determining the legitimacy of the report. The delegation and local officials will continue to monitor the situation, and will have more to say if the information is verified.

Ahh the instant response of “Trump bigots.” Actually not an argument or a helpful response. Just exactly what is happening is my question? Why are they being moved? Who is paying for it? Why here, where the economy is already depressed and no jobs are available to provide “low income” people with the ability to provide for themselves? This isn’t growth it is replacement.

      The definition of fake news.

With our rents and overall cost of living being lower here in Allegany County, it’s quite likely that this is what is motivating poorer people in Baltimore to move here.

It isn’t a question of “wants to” when the only two choices are being evicted and homeless or moving here.

Calling our home a ghetto says a lot about your viewpoint. While Cumberland does have issues we need to address, this is a far better place to live than the worst neighborhoods of Baltimore.

            > First, you must not live in Cumberland. Second, why on earth would you think that someone evicted in Baltimore only has one other choice-move here. ? And I guess you think the state would pay ALL the moving expenses too? makes no damn sense. I’ve been hearing this b.s. about all the ‘darkies’ moving here for decades now (since the 1st prison went up) and if it was true Allegany County would be 90+% Black by now!! As I said, just more racist crap from the local bigots/junkies.

            > btw, what else would you call a town where there’s heroin needles laying all over and half the population is either stealing things or being 20 dollar prostitutes to support their habits and 100′s of houses are vacant or drug dens?? Most people call that a ‘ghetto’. Ours is just a mostly ‘white’ one.

    Mark,

Do you honestly believe that “half the population is either stealing things or being 20 dollar prostitutes” here in Cumberland? I’m guessing that you’re just making a point and for the most part, it is a valid one.

What you seem to have missed is that theft and drugs are in all of our cities to varying degrees.

As to why people would move here, Baltimore is a far more dangerous place to live or to try and raise a family then even the worst parts of Cumberland.

Do I believe that “the state would pay ALL the moving expenses too?” No, I’m not sure why anyone would think that but a U-haul truck with gas and insurance would probably pay for itself in one month with the difference in monthly rental prices here.

But more to the point, Americans have the right to move where they choose in this country (even the poor people) so we can probably expect people will continue to move here. Who knows, maybe they’ll even create enough demand where those “100′s of houses are vacant or drug dens” will get rehabbed for rentals.

      > Of course folks can move where there want. And I actually think Cumberland is a bit of a magnet for poor folks, just not so much from Baltimore. Check the last US Census records and you’ll see NO noticeable increase in minority population in Allegany County or Cumberland. But what I have seen, though is admittedly just anecdotal, is people from surrounding counties move here for simple & logical reasons. To wit- If you & the kids live 20/30 miles out in the woods and don’t have a car or a broken down one it’s near impossible to get to the county seat to access doctors, pharmacies, social offices, etc. Here in Cumberland it’s a one stop shop and many from WV & PA already have friends/relatives here. (plus MD has much more generous social help) I don’t blame these folks, I just tire of locals BLAMING our problems on ‘outsiders’. That’s what doesn’t help the locals get the REAL HELP they need, no matter their race, etc. But the sad part is Cumberland has gladly spent millions creating an empty lot called ‘Rolling Mills’ & is now going to spend millions more changing the brick color on the downtown mall. I do hope Cumberland turns around, but that won’t happen until we get local & state leaders that ACTUALLY give a god damn about the people already here & struggling! But helping poor people (really helping, not HANDOUTS) isn’t popular in this area.

      > p.s. Being very familiar with local rentals I can say one reason houses won’t get ‘rehabbed’ is that without good paying jobs many rentals end up owed by outside investors who rent to HUD tenants. But due to the extensive damage tenants do to the buildings, many investors & local owners are walking away from their own rental properties or refusing HUD tenants. This isn’t meant as a knock on the tenants, just a fact, as I’ve worked on many of these properties. Our local situation is very complicated but it’s not just here, it’s in many places in the US. And some of it is a ‘culture’ of despair, disrespect, some ‘entitlement’ and many other things, imho.

        > Excuse the long ramble, but one last point- I’ve personally known of 3 non-whites that moved here because they had VERY WELL PAYING jobs at the local hospital and ALL 3 moved away soon because they tired of the local racism and the harmful effects on their children. Too many locals don’t want ‘them’ here and believe me, they know it! Just like this so-called ‘caller’ to WCBC. Besides, put yourself in their shoes, what’s here for them? (other than cheap rent?) You think maybe they’d like to join the local rod & gun club and hang out with Bubba & Cletus from the local Klan? Or think about it the other way- let’s say it’s Baltimore that has the low rents and low crime, would you pack up your family and move away from your childhood friends/family/and all you’ve ever known to move into an all Black neighborhood where you have no social life or any other connection? Just to save on rent money? (assuming you are white) I seriously doubt
