Short of increasing taxes or cutting key services- Cumberland City officials believe the best way to turn the city’s fiscal picture around is by expanding the tax base. The subject was discussed this week during the city’s budget work session with a focus on the need for quality, affordable housing- combined with a need to improve the city’s reputation. After decades of moaning about no jobs in the area, it is good to see folks admitting that the locals are too lame to do them if there were any. So, lets see where we stand; to make the city viable all we need are new businesses, new housing, a new population and a new, false, public image. Well, this sounds like much work for the half-witted consultants that so impress our leaders. This should dwarf the Rolling Mill fiasco of ~ $30K for a study and ~ $5 million to carry out the first step of creating a vacant lot. As Grim has said, when he spends city money on a study, he won’t let those thousands go to waste by leaving the study unimplemented sitting of a shelf no matter how many millions the city needs to go into debt to pursue the daft plan. Lucky he got rid of the old controller a few years ago who poo pooed all this borrowing. Smooth sailing for Grim times ahead!

There ARE jobs. They just don’t offer a living wage or benefits. Most importantly, they don’t offer any opportunities for advancement. Instead of promoting from within, any time a GOOD job opens up around here (rarely,) it’s filled by an outside hire, most likely because the person is related to or friends with the person doing the hiring. And we all know how that turns out. (See Hotel Gunther for details.) It’s pretty sad that we’ve got a state University here and nothing better to offer its graduates than prisons, fast food, or truck driving.
