Cardin Calls New SNAP Rule a Heartless Attack on Vulnerable Americans

December 5th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, denounced the Trump Administration’s final rule announced Wednesday that changes the conditions under which states apply for waivers of the work requirement for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This new rule would disproportionally affect part-time workers and seasonal holiday employees with unreliable hours.  An estimated 30,000 Marylanders could be affected.

“Congress has repeatedly, with bipartisan supermajorities, shown its compassion for Americans in need, rather than impose draconian work rules that will force over 750,000 individuals to lose benefits. Most Americans who receive SNAP benefits already are working, but they do not make enough to make ends meet for their families. This is a tragedy in itself, but now, President Trump’s heartless proposal will hurt families and our local economies by taking away the states’ abilities to determine what works best for their population.”

Instead of depending on the government, the majority of the benefactors of SNAP should just get a job!

Keep up the good work Trump. MAGA

      > The cuts are aimed at low income people who have a job and it will also cut free and reduced cost school meals from their kids. This is of course from the same thief who robbed the Treasury, takes money from foreign governments and puts kids in cages. #MAGA

        > Actually it is not a big difference. After reading the actual report. It is aimed only at those without dependents who don’t work but is abled bodied and those not on SSDI and SSI.

They are the beneficiaries, the benefactors are the ones who SIGN the checks.

        > Cardin just loves giving away other people’s money. Remember when he wanted $3,000,000.00 to funnel to some company his son was affiliated with to study the migratory habits of water fowl in the Chesapeake Bay ? I can save you two million, nine hundred & ninety thousand ! Ben, when birds flap their wings they actually fly, it’s a miracle. I be in Annapolis Monday to pick up my ten grand.

Yes! Trump’s “good work”. He is evidently a better than average comedian. He has made himself the laughing stock of the world as well as diminishing the respect the rest of the world used to have for the United States of America.

Heartless like how. How is Dollar General, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree along with Sheetz allowed to participate in SNAP. Pretty corrupt. They aren’t in the grocery business.

Also it isn’t anything new. Read the story before commenting. That might show you that the policy is not extremely different. Besides here is a good idea. Time for all liquor stores, convenience stores/gas stations and not real grocery store chains like Dollar General/Dollar Tree and Family dollar along with high end Grocery stores to be taken off of SNAP participation. We save billions. Also subject those with Dependents to the same rule as the able bodied without dependents. No reads the part that those with dependents are still exempt.

Say what you will, but SNAP has been in need of serious reform for a long time and you are naive to believe otherwise.

      > If we start subjecting those with dependents who are able bodied to the same work rules with an exception of a disabled child getting SSI people would get a new attitude.

Please be informed and educated before you comment. The 700,000 that are coming off of the SNAP program are between the ages of 18 and 50. They are not disabled so they can work. The free ride is bankrupting us. Educate yourself and logic and reasoning. Do not be ruled by your hatred of the President!!
