CEDC Acquires Former M&T Bank Building To Convert Into Boutique Hotel

The Cumberland Economic Development Commission announced late Thursday the acquisition of 118 Baltimore Street in Cumberland with the goal being to see the former M&T Bank building converted into a boutique hotel- serving as an anchor for the re-designed downtown business district. The property was purchased with a $500,000 Governor’s Capital Project Grant awarded to the CEDC for the sole purpose of revitalizing real property in the Baltimore Street corridor.  While the preliminary discussions have centered on a boutique hotel project, CEDC executive director Paul Kelly said that any and all proposals will be considered for the project.     Let’s be honest this is a done deal. Legally CEDC has to take other proposals, but it has already been decided.

    Here’s a radical idea that I have heard in the past. Wanna get more bodies downtown with more dynamic activity, energy, and vibrancy? Create a downtown campus for AC on Baltimore Street. There are plenty of empty buildings to accommodate the needed classroom and adminstrative space. Isn’t the Culinary Center downtown run by AC?
