CEDC & DDC Schedule Public Input Event

October 27th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Economic Development Corporation (“CEDC”) and Downtown Development Commission (“DDC”) will host a free public participation workshop to discuss the redesign of Baltimore Street on November 10th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at 9 N. Centre Street, Second Floor, Cumberland, MD.

Reimagine Cumberland offers residents the opportunity to help reshape Cumberland’s most important civic space while building it into a major catalyst for downtown revitalization. The CEDC and DDC engaged Frederick-based design firm Cochran Studio to redesign the streetscape for Baltimore Street and surrounding streets, while the City of Cumberland works to update and upgrade important utilities that run beneath the street.

The streetscape design plan will transform Baltimore Street, highlighting the famous architecture and protecting and brightening this important public space through lighter pavers, better lighting, and innovative green infrastructure to improve public safety, health, and comfort and support local businesses and restaurants.  Among the elements under consideration are a colonnade of large, highcanopy shade trees and a Public Art Master Plan with sites and recommendations for public art.

Designer William Cochran and his partner Teresa have helmed transformative public projects in cities throughout the mid-Atlantic region and beyond for more than 25 years, including Community Bridge in Frederick, MD and projects in Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, NY. Teresa Cochran facilitates innovative public participation processes the team uses to help communities make rapid consensual decisions about their future.

The purpose of the Reimagine Cumberland event on November 10th is to preview the plans for the City Center and to give residents a voice in how it is designed. Event leaders will engage participants in a series of questions and conversations with fellow residents to develop and refine the feedback the design team needs to complete the final streetscape plan.
