The U.S. Senate election in Maryland got a little more interesting a few weeks ago when Chelsea Manning filed to run. Manning, the transgender former Army private who was convicted of passing sensitive government documents to WikiLeaks, will be challenging Democrat Benjamin Cardin, who is in his second term in the Senate and is up for reelection in November. Cardin is Maryland’s senior senator and is considered an overwhelming favorite to win a third term. While Cardin has declined to comment specifically about Manning’s entry into the race- his fellow senator Chris Van Hollen has.
