Cioni Comments on Vacant Council Seat Selection Process

January 11th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council have completed a series of 15 interviews over a four day period this week and  are close to announcing the person who will be appointed to fill the vacant council seat. The council seat opened in November as David Caporale resigned shortly after being  elected as a member of the Allegany County board of Commissioners. A total of 16 letters of interest were received by the December 7th deadline, but one person withdrew prior to the interviews this week. Councilman Rock Cioni, the last person appointed to a seat on the council in February of 2016,  told WCBC News that the city felt it important to have a level playing field for the selection process- with everyone who expressed an interest afforded the  opportunity to be heard…

At the advice of legal council, the names of the applicants have not been released to the public- but all now have been confirmed through various sources by WCBC News. They include: Andrea Beall; Lawrence Becker; Kathy Blume; Rhiannon Brown; Stu Czapski; Erin Delong; John Fetchero; Jeff Hedrick; Larry Jackson; Laurie Marchini; Yvonne Perret; Kelly Robertson; John Sangiovani; David Smith; Buck Taylor; and Sylvester Young III.  A source at city hall told WCBC News that Rhinannon Brown is the person that chose to withdraw from consideration.  With the interviews complete, an announcement could come at anytime. The next public meeting of the City Council is Tuesday, January 15th.
