City Council Orders Bridge Engineering Studies

Cumberland officials took action last week that will lead to a clearer picture of the financial package needed to replace two bridges on the West Side. The city council voted to approve an order for engineering studies for design alternatives for new vehicular bridges on Fayette and Washington streets. The city agreed to accept a proposal from the Wilson T. Ballard Co. for the studies- costing a total of $77,000. The West Side has three vehicular bridges currently closed after failing safety inspections. In addition to the bridges at Fayette and Washington streets, a third span at Cumberland Street is also closed due to its deteriorating condition. While the Cumberland Street bridge could be completed by 2020- the engineering study is needed before any timeline or costs estimates will be available for Fayette and Washington streets. City solicitor Mike Cohen said that he expects Wilson T. Ballard to begin the first of the year and it to be a four-month design period…
