City Council Unveils New Baltimore Street Concept

By unanimous vote this week, the Cumberland Mayor and City Council approved a design concept for the addition of a street through the downtown pedestrian mall. It is a pricey undertaking for the city with a projected cost of more than $5.5 million- and essentially will return vehicular traffic to Baltimore Street for the first time in more than 40 years- as it was closed and bricked over in 1977.  The chosen design features 21 staggered parallel parking spaces along a one-way street running west to east from Mechanic Street to George Street.  Paul Kelly, executive director of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation, said the next step will be detailed architectural drawings- adding that he would not expect construction on the project to begin this year.
