City Facing Skyrocketing Health Insurance Costs

One of the bigger fiscal challenges faced by the city of Cumberland is the skyrocketing cost of health insurance. City Administrator Jeff Rhodes says that the city, which currently has 261 full-time employees, is facing increasing economic stress for fiscal 2017 as a result of health care costs.  The city belongs to a health care insurance co-operative with several other organizations and municipalities. The health care plan is administered by CIGNA, with the city incurring fixed administrative costs as well as paying claims. City comptroller Ken Tressler says that one way of reducing the costs may be to hire a wellness coordinator with a focus on educating city employees on preventative measures…
