City Issues Status Report On West Side Bridge Situation

June 23rd, 2018 by WCBC Radio

The City of Cumberland is providing an update regarding the CSX owned Fayette Street Bridge that was struck Thursday, confirming some of the information presented by City Councilman Dave Caporale on WCBC Friday morning.

The bridge will remain closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic as a result of a recent accident. The bridge was closed immediately after the accident for safety concerns and will remain closed for an undetermined period of time. Motorists are advised the Washington Street, Fayette Street and Cumberland Street Bridges are all closed at this time to Vehicular Traffic. While the City regrets this inconvenience, public safety is the highest priority and cooperation of the motoring public and pedestrians is appreciated.

We have spoken to staff at CSX Transportation but it will take time to fully inspect the bridges and determine the condition of the Washington Street pedestrian crossing and the vehicular and pedestrian crossings at Fayette Street” said John DiFonzo, City Engineer. “We continue to remain in close contact with CSX officials and CSX has expressed the desire to meet as soon as possible to review the most recent accident and the long term future of the three CSX bridges” added DiFonzo.

CSX and City officials are scheduled to meet Monday to determine if the Fayette Street bridge can be temporarily opened to one-lane traffic and what repairs may be necessary as a result of Thursdays accident at the Washington Street and Fayette Street bridge crossings.
