City man gets life sentence

October 24th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

A Cumberland, Md. man has been formally ordered to spend the rest of his life in prison for fatally shooting his ex-wife’s fiance in western Pennsylvania. The Cumberland Times News reports that Mark Shirey, 45, said Tuesday he regretted the March 2011 killing’s impact on his four children but spoke also of his anger toward victim Michael Simpson.

Shirey said he killed Simpson inside his Cumberland Valley, Bedford County home because of the relationship he had with the woman Shirey had divorced about 10 years earlier. Authorities said Shirey broke into Simpson’s house and repeatedly shot him when he arrived home. Prosecutors were seeking the death penalty before Shirey agreed to plead guilty in September.
