City Police Make Arrest on Child Neglect

May 17th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

On May 16, 2019 officers from the Cumberland City Police Department responded to Jane Frazier Village for a reported fight in the streets.  After investigating the matter, officers learned that no assault had taken place and prepared to clear the area.  Prior to officers leaving the area they observed a vehicle running with no one around.   Officers checked on the vehicle and found a 4 year old child inside the vehicle crying.   Officers completed checks of the vehicle and found the registration plates did not belong on the vehicle.  Several additional attempts were made to identify the owner so they could be contacted in regards to their child being left unattended.   Officers were assisted on the scene by Child Protective Services in regards to the care and custody of the child.  Officers eventually located a male who was walking in the area.  The male was identified as Jenius Daniels.  Daniels approached the officers and attempted to take the child.  Officers confronted Daniels about the child being left in a running vehicle with no one around.  Daniels began to argue with officers and began to create a disturbance.  Daniels was advised by officers that they were conducting an investigation and he needed to lower his voice.  Daniels failed to obey the officer’s orders and had to be placed under arrest.  Daniels was transported to the Cumberland City Police Department for processing.  The child was later released to a family member at the request of Child Protective Services.  The officers in this matter made note that the child was left unattended in a running vehicle which was unlocked with all the windows up.  The outside temperature at the time of this incident was 77 degrees.  Daniels was processed, served and taken before the District Court Commissioner.  Daniels was held in the Allegany County Detention Center on $7,500.

Arrested: Jenius Larry Daniels                                       Age: 37 of Cumberland, Maryland

Charges: Neglect of Minor, Reckless Endangerment, Obstructing and Hindering and Disorderly Conduct.
