City To Meet In Closed Session With Local Firefighters Union Today

May 6th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council will meet in closed session today to discuss negotiations and litigation between the city and the local firefighters union. Judge Timothy Finan ruled late Friday that the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1715 and the city of Cumberland should immediately begin alternative dispute resolution to reach an accord for a new labor contract.  The judge ordered both sides to engage in good faith in the ADR with Local 1715 as part of the final declaration and order resolving all issues that were brought before the court.  Both sides have been in negotiations since January to reach agreement for a new contract, however, an impasse in the negotiations was declared Thursday when the case was brought before Finan. The matter was taken to circuit court by Local 1715 in an effort to resolve the labor contract dispute. The city has announced its intentions to switch its medical insurer for city employees, a move the city said would save hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Ken Mckenzie, President of Local 1715, tells WCBC News he wants those savings to be used specifically for the fire department to maintain staffing at current levels…
