There has been no shortage of finger- pointing in the past few weeks with news surfacing that there has been consideration of phasing out the popular Opportunity Scholarship program. Allegany County receives annually 3.75% of the electronic gaming revenue from the Rocky Gap Casio Resort. A portion of the money is subsequently given to area nonprofits, including the Opportunity Scholarship Program which provides funds for area students to attend Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University. Although the Allegany County Commissioners have the final say- it was the 15 member Local Development Council that determined the allocation funding mix. Delegates Jason Buckel and Mike McKay are members of the LDC and according to one council member- they were the leading advocates to phase out the program, with more money targeted toward emergency services. During the most recent commissioners meeting, Commission President Jake Shade said the county wants to retain the scholarship program and is confident the matter will be resolved in the near future…

Commission President Shade says that he wants to retain the Scholarship program and the Local Development Council says that the decision is in the hands of the County Commission. That seems to answer the question.
