While it is clearly a city of Cumberland issue, Allegany County Commissioners President Jake Shade said he considers re-opening the Washington and Cumberland street bridges in the city’s Westside to be a county priority as well. The bridges, two of three owned by CSX Transportation, have been badly deteriorating for years and closed last year after failing safety inspections. The crux of the problem is getting CSX to accept responsibility for the aging structures and to at least partially contribute financially to getting them replaced or repaired. Shade acknowledges that dealing with CSX can be a challenge, but says efforts need to continue to get all sides to cooperate to find a solution…
