Commissioners Send Kirwan Commission Letter Expressing Concern

November 20th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Commissioners recently sent the Kirwan Commission a letter expressing their concern regarding the proposed mandates adopted by the Commission. Specifically, the Commissioners addressed the proposed cost to Allegany County. The letter pointed out that based on the figures that have been provided, the County’s overall spending for education will grow from $30.7 million currently to $38 million by FY 2030. This $8 million increase in county funding over the next nine budget years would require a 16% tax increase to county residents over the same timeframe. Those funding issues were also raised by the commissioners during a recent meeting with the District One Legislative Delegation.  State Senator George Edwards  said while Governor Larry Hogan is prepared to fight any plan that would call for tax hikes or mandates on local governments- but it will be an uphill battle- and he hopes to see counties from across the state lobby against it…

Is this increase of $8 million over nine budget years based on the current and continuing declining student enrollment? No mention is made of that fact. That $8 million figure would mean more and more money being spent on fewer and fewer students. Shouldn’t that figure decline every budget year as student enrollment declines?

This is absolute insanity. More money is not going to fix the education problems. But, hey, what do we poor rural folks know about anything, right?

Right now most of the people moving to Allegany County pay no taxes and the people who can afford to leave move to Pennsylvania or West Virginia there’s a reason Maryland is considered the worst state in America to retire in just remember in Pennsylvania none of your retirement is tax by the state get out now and save yourselves
