Commissioners To Honor County Veterans

The Allegany County Commissioners, William R. Valentine, Creade V. Brodie, Jr., and Jacob C. Shade, wish to honor all veterans and express sincere gratitude to these individuals for their unwavering commitment to our county, justice, and democracy. The county commissioners will recognize all veterans at the public business meeting on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. This is held at the Allegany County Office Building, 701 Kelly Road – Room 100, Cumberland. All veterans as well as members of the general public are invited to this recognition.

Thirty current Allegany County Government employees have identified themselves as veterans of service in the United States Armed Forces. The 30 individuals have from three to 35 years of military service. Brian P. Westfall, SPHR-SCP, SHRM-SCP, IPMA-CP, Director of Human Resources and Personnel Services, will read the names of these veterans at this event. All veterans present, Allegany County Government employees as well as members of the general public, will be asked to stand and be recognized. The County Commissioners will present an official citation. This will be accepted on behalf of all veterans by Larry E. Schlossnagle, Risk Manager, Allegany County Department of Human Resources and Personnel Services. Schlossnagle was in the National Guard for 35 years and served one year of active duty in Iraq.

Allegany County Government supports veterans in word and action. The Allegany County Commissioners have pledged to the Department of Defense that employment will not be denied because of service in the Guard or Reserve; employee job and career opportunities will not be limited or reduced because of service in the Guard or Reserve; employees will be granted leaves of absence for military training in the Guard or Reserve, consistent with existing laws, without sacrifice of vacation.

Allegany County Government has been honored by the United States Department of Defense with the Above and Beyond Award for outstanding service and continuing support to the national defense. Allegany County Government has also been recognized as an American Patriot by the Army National Guard for supporting our soldiers in the National Guard who are defending freedom at home and around the world.
