Committee Accepts Local Contractor Bid for Lefty Grove Statue

The Cumberland Times-News reports that a local contractor has been chosen by the Lefty Grove Statue Project Committee to create the mini-ballpark in downtown Lonaconing where a bronze likeness of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher will be erected. The committee last week accepted a $98,279 bid by Harbel Construction Company to provide lighting, fencing and bleachers as part of the yesteryear baseball diamond designed by former Allegany County resident Zachary Klipstein, architect with Torti Gallas and Partners, Silver Spring. Bucky Schriver, who organized the effort, said that the  contract calls for the work to be completed in 90 days. Schriver said fundraising will continue to bring in another $25,000 that will pay for signage at the park at the corner of Union and Main, just across the street from where Robert Moses “Lefty” Grove operated a bowling alley after his major league career…
