Congressman Trone Statement Ahead of Joint Congressional Session

January 5th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

Today, U.S. Congressman David Trone released the below statement amid reports that Congressional Republicans would vote against counting electoral college votes from the November 3rd election:

“It is a sad day for democracy when the political ambition of politicians threatens the will of the American people. Since the signing of the Constitution, the idea of a government ruled by the people has guided generations of Americans as they strive towards a more perfect union. With hurdles along the way, our country has persisted towards this ideal.

“But the words and actions from Republican members of Congress about their intent to vote against the will of the people in order to appease Donald Trump is both upsetting and dangerous. Since he came into office, President Trump’s abuse of power and disregard for democratic norms has been on full display, the latest through his attempts to coerce state officials to change the certified results of the election in Georgia. It’s absolutely disheartening to see Republicans in Congress acquiesce to and join in on these antidemocratic antics from the president.

“Our country is in crisis, from COVID-19 and its economic effects to the exacerbated addiction and mental health epidemics. Americans deserve a Congress focused on what matters to the American people they came to represent, not one that wastes time helping a lame-duck president raise money (since election day Trump has raised over $200 million for an “Election Defense Fund”).

“It’s time to get to work for the American people. Along with President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris, I am looking forward to creating a future our children can be proud of.”
