County Begins To Deal With Loss Of Paper Mill

May 2nd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

A response team of local and state officials is in place as Allegany County begins dealing with the loss of one of its major employers and last of the smoke stack industries. The Verso Corporation announced Tuesday morning the Luke Mill would be closing by the end of June- eliminating 675 jobs.   Allegany County Administrator Brandon Butler, appearing on WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show” the day after the announcement, said he already has been in contact with the Hogan administration and federal representatives about worker retraining opportunities and other state and federal programs that help communities deal with large plant closures…

Is anybody working on trying to keep the paper mill open or is everybody just giving up

In 1987 after the Kelly locked its doors. the city of Cumberland decided to punish every homeowner with a whooping huge property tax increase. Later led to Wyckoff and Pete Elliott being ousted from Office in 1988. Hopefully the current County Commissioners don’t get any idea of a whooping property tax hike. The Town of Luke may fold up after 2020 when Verso pays its Property tax bill for 2019-2020 year.

    Good work, thank you

    > Its still Verso’s plant! They are not gonna sell to a competitor. Nobody can keep it open but Verso.
