County, City to form task force looking at consolidation

February 23rd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

The Allegany County Commissioners and the Cumberland Mayor and City Council Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a task force to work toward creating a more efficient local government operation. Comprised of Allegany County and Cumberland officials and stakeholders, the task force will be  dedicated to examining ways to efficiently deliver services between the two entities. Commissioners President Jake Shade said the there will be no restrictions placed on the task force with everything on the table for consideration. Shade said candidates for both the county and city pledged during last year’s campaign to make a more concerted effort to work together- and this MOU is a follow up on that pledge. Mayor Ray Morriss said that in addition to improving the delivery of services- he hopes this joint effort will go along way toward dispelling the notion that the city and county are at odds. With the Task Force  charged with submitting a report by the end of June- appointing members from both the private and public sectors will take place in the near future.
