As a result of a discrepancy, it appears as though Allegany County may be receiving almost $400,000 less in state funding in the next fiscal year. Finance Director Jason Bennett, during a recent budget work session, noted that the local government is compensated by the state for the large amount of land in Allegany County that is state owned. The county, by way of an annual Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT), has benefited as the payment offsets monies the county could earn if the land were placed in private hands, generating local tax dollars. Bennett said that the governor's budget shows an increase from $1.3 million to nearly $1.5 million for Allegany County. He notes however, that the state department of assessments and taxation wants to reduce the PILOT payment amount.
