County suspends recycling

March 17th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County will be suspending its recycling program beginning Friday, March 20 at 4 pm in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Most collection containers will be removed from the sites and signs will be posted. Utilizing sites during this suspension is considered illegal dumping.

The County is taking precautions to prevent littering at the sites, encourage social distancing, and for the safety of our workers handling recyclables.

As of March 17 there are no changes to the operations of the County Mulch and Yard Trim Site and Residential Trash Site Operations in Frostburg, Oldtown, Little Orleans and Flintstone.

Residents are encouraged to save their clean recyclables during the suspension.

How is stopping the program effective against the virus? It should be a relatively safe process as it exists now. I never see crowds at the site.

I am wondering about thus also. Perhaps a county official can clarify this.

Perhaps they are concerned that we might bring out our dead.

OMG, what’s next? I recycle very frequently and I don’t believe I’ve ever seen more than 3 people at one time at any particular site.

Yes, I would enjoy hearing a rational explanation from the County as to how this action is virus related. What we have heard so far is not it. The cynic in me says this is a precursor to doing away with the program. When the virus is over, it simply won’t come back. This program is and has been a burden for the hard line fiscal hawks. Plus they now have to play budget games to pay for the school bill.
