Cox Presents Update on Declining Enrollment Numbers

Enrollment at public schools in Allegany County continues to fall and Superintendent David Cox says that could lead to a significant financial hit. Cox presented a brief update on three-year enrollment numbers during Wednesday’s regular board of education meeting.  Falling enrollment for school districts in Maryland impacts the school system’s funding. The state of Maryland bases its contribution to each of the 24 school districts based on enrollment. The most recent numbers show a decline of just over 100 full time students- and that could equate to a loss of $1.3 million in state and county funding next year.  Not included in the enrollment totals is pre-kindergarten. Pre-K student enrollment is not subject to state funding…
