CPD Make Arrest In Wednesday Night South End Stabbing

On Wednesday evening, May 25, 2016, at 10:32 PM, the Cumberland Police, with assistance from the Allegany County Sheriff's Office, responded to a reported stabbing which had just occurred near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 4th Street in Cumberland. Officers arrived at approximately the same time as the Cumberland Fire Department ambulance and discovered a 45 year old male victim suffering from stab wounds to the upper torso. The victim was transported to the Western Maryland Health System Regional Medical Center for emergency treatment of what was determined to be life threatening stab wounds.

            Investigators with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. The scene was processed for evidence by a Crime Scene Technician with the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division.

            C3I Investigators interviewed numerous individuals and reviewed surveillance video from different locations. Investigators also obtained a search warrant for a private residence and recovered additional evidence. As a result, a suspect was identified.

            After consulting with the Allegany County State's Attorney's Office, Investigators arrested 46 year old Bernard Ferguson, of Cumberland, and charged him with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, and Reckless Endangerment. He is currently awaiting an initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner.

            The investigation is continuing by the Cumberland Police and C3I.
