CSX Transfers Ownership Of Cumberland Street Bridge To City

In what is being viewed as the first official step in the process that could lead to new bridges on the Westside, the mayor and City Council approved a transaction Thursday that transfer’s ownership of the Cumberland Street bridge from CSX Transportation to the city. The transaction will allow the city to seek federal funding for the construction of a new bridge at Cumberland Street- which has been closed for a year after failing a safety inspection. Bridges on Fayette and Washington streets are also closed- and talks between the city and CSX will resume today at City Hall. While the preliminary estimate for the completion of the Cumberland Street bridge is sometime in 2020, Mayor Brian Grim has declined to speculate on the other Westside bridges being replaced and re-opened…
