Cumberland Arms Complex To Get Renovations

During last week's regular business meeting, the Allegany County commissioners approved an agreement that will pay the county more than $30,000 in lieu of property taxes for the first year and an inflation adjusted figure for the remaining 16 years of the pact designed to lead to the renovation of the Cumberland Arms apartment complex. THe Hampstead Companies, based in California, will handle the renovations at the aging structure located at 64 Baltimore Street, County Administrator Dave Eberly said the 17-year contract will pay the county $30,433.60 for the first year and after that, a figure based on the consumer price index. Company spokesman Patrick Harper said he believes the project will be a perfect fit for downtown Cumberland…





The total cost of the upgrades to the 96 apartments will be about $2.5 million. Work is expected to begin in February or March of 2015 and be done by the end of the year. The people who live in the building will have to be relocated temporarily, but Harper said his company has a good track record for handling the process.
