Cumberland Economy Expanding Despite Pandemic

Despite remaining in the midst of a pandemic and struggling national economy, interest in business start-ups in downtown Cumberland is actually growing.  Enthusiasm about the potential for new business opportunities dominated much of the discussion during Thursday’s regular meeting of the Downtown Development Commission. The new Lost Mountain BBQ on North Centre Street opened to booming business last week, and other new ventures are apparently in the works. Kathy McKenney, with the city’s department of community development, said with many of the potential start-ups looking to locate in Cumberland’s historic district, establishing a connection between the businesses and the Historic Preservation Commission should be a priority…

 

Mayor Ray Morriss acknowledged that there is a perception that the Preservation Commission creates road blocks when it comes to opening businesses,  or upgrading properties.  He would like to see that perception change, with the commission viewed as a help and not a hindrance
