Cumberland Launches Downtown WiFi

August 29th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The City of Cumberland launched a free public wireless hotspot in the heart of downtown Cumberland last week.   Primarily designed for use in open space and outside common areas, City Center WiFi has been strategically employed to enhance the central business district.  The coverage area of the new network includes the downtown mall and connecting areas of Liberty Street, Mechanic Street, Center Street and Queen City Drive.  Access is provided free of charge and no password is needed for connection.

“Thanks to the efforts of our MIS and Central Services Department, who built and installed the system,” stated Jeff Rhodes, City Administrator, “a free wireless zone will now be accessible throughout the downtown that benefits residents and visitors alike.”

The hotspot will be fully accessible within certain areas but, as with any Wi-Fi service, signal strength may be affected by the user’s surroundings.  As the service is being provided free of charge, the City will offer no direct technical support.
