Cumberland man arrested on gun charges

On Friday night deputies of the Allegany County Sheriff's Office responded to a Welsh Hill Road address in Frostburg in reference to a disturbance. While en route the deputies were advised a male subject was at the residence and he was threatening to "shoot it out" with police when they arrive. Deputies arrived on scene and eventually contacted the male subject who was identified as 33 year old James Jacob Barnes of Cumberland. Barnes was detained and a search of the area was completed with assistance of the Frostburg Police Department. No weapons were located on scene, but a box of 9 millimeter ammunition was located in Mr. Barnes' backpack. A check through the Maryland Firearms Unit revealed that Barnes was restricted from possessing firearms or ammunition. Barnes was taken into custody and a search was completed of his Cumberland residence.

During the search five (5) long guns were located along with a loaded

9 millimeter handgun. A large quantity of ammunition was also located inside the residence. Barnes was charged with the following crimes in reference to the incident.

 

Five counts of illegal possession of rifle/shotgun One count of possession of a regulated firearm One count of illegal possession of ammunition

 

Barnes was taken before a District Court commissioner for an initial hearing and he was released on personal recognizance.
