In December 2019 the Cumberland Police and the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I) began an investigation into an allegation of a sexual offense. Investigators interviewed the victim, who advised that she had been sexually assaulted in 2015, when she was just 13 years of age. She identified the suspect and was able to provide details about the assault.

 

            Investigators obtained additional evidence, and as a result, applied for and obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect, 24 year old Seth Alexander Griffith, of Cumberland, who would have been 20 years of age at the time of the incident. Alexander was arrested by C3I Investigators, with the assistance of the Cumberland Police, on 12/20/2019.

 

            Alexander was charged with 2nd Degree Rape, Sexual Abuse of a Minor, and 2nd Degree Assault.

 

            During the investigation into the initial allegation C3I Investigators learned there was another potential victim. Investigators were able to identify and interview this victim, who advised that she had been sexually assaulted in March 2019 by Griffith, when she was 17 years of age.

 

            Additional information and evidence was also obtained in this incident. The case was presented to the Allegany County Grand Jury, and an indictment charging Griffith with additional counts of 2nd Degree Rape, 4th Degree Sex Offense, Sexual Abuse of a Minor, and 2nd Degree Assault, related to this victim, was issued.

 

            Griffith was served the indictment on 01/27/2020 by the Cumberland Police. He is currently being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center, pending his next court appearance.
