According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, a Cumberland, Md., delivery man has been charged in connection with stealing items from a car on Thursday while he was working a job near Hagerstown. The Herald Mail reports Clifton Lee Martin, 27, was charged with theft. Deputies said the incident happened in the 13500 block of Halifax Drive, where Martin and his co-worker were delivering a washer and dryer.

When the co-worker was in the basement with the victim, a child allegedly saw Martin take a set of car keys and start rummaging through a vehicle that was parked outside.

The child told the victim what happened, and Martin was caught inside the vehicle. He was accused of stealing cash and medications from the victim's purse, police said.

Martin left the area before a deputy arrived, but he returned after authorities called him on a cellphone. He was taken to central booking and released on his personal recognizance, the release said.

The sheriff office reminded residents that it is always best to escort strangers while on their property.
